Algunos amantes del occidente en los países islámicos claman estar llenos de amor y compasión por todas las criaturas vivientes y se preguntan porqué el Islam advierte contra "el mejor amigo" del hombre. Por su beneficio, citamos aquí un extenso extracto de un artículo escrito por el científico alemán, el Dr. Gerard Finstimer *

El autor resalta los peligros que corre la salud humana al tener perros en las casas o entrar en contacto con estos. Dice:


"El creciente interés mostrado por mucha gente en tiempos recientes por tener perros como mascotas, nos ha obligado a llamar la atención del público hacia los peligros que esto puede acarrear.


Especialmente, porque los perros mascotas son abrazados y besados y se les permite lamer las manos de niños y adultos y lo que es peor, lamer los utensilios que los seres humanos usan para comer y beber.
Además de ser antihigiénica y grosera, esta práctica es una mala costumbre y detestable para el buen gusto. Sin embargo, tales asuntos no nos interesan. Dejaremos que sean tratados por maestros de etiqueta y buen gusto. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar algunas observaciones científicas.


Desde el punto de vista médico, que es nuestro mayor interés, la amenaza a la salud humana y la vida que proviene de tener perros y jugar con ellos no puede ser ignorada. Muchas personas han pagado un elevado precio por su ignorancia, pues la "tenia del perro" es causa de una enfermedad crónica que hasta puede causar la muerte.


Esta lombriz se encuentra en el hombre, en el ganado y en el cerdo; pero se encuentra en su forma totalmente desarrollada sólo en el perro, el lobo y raramente en los gatos. Estas lombrices se diferencian de las demás en el hecho de que son diminutas e invisibles. Por esta razón, no fueron descubiertas hasta recién...


Biológicamente, el proceso de crecimiento de esta lombriz tiene unas características únicas. En las heridas que causa, una lombriz genera varias cabezas que se esparcen y causan varias otras heridas y abscesos. Estas cabezas se convierten en lombrices totalmente desarrolladas sólo en las amígdalas del perro. En los seres humanos y en otros animales se convierten en lesiones y abscesos completamente diferentes de la misma lombriz.


En los animales, un absceso puede llegar al tamaño de una manzana, mientras el hígado del animal infectado puede crecer de cinco hasta diez veces el tamaño normal. En los seres humanos el tamaño del absceso puede llegar al de un puño cerrado o incluso, la cabeza de un niño. Los abscesos suelen estar llenos con un fluido amarillo y pesan entre 10 y 20 libras. En los humanos infectados pueden causar distintas inflamaciones en los pulmones, los músculos, el bazo, los riñones y el cerebro. Suelen aparecer en muchas y distintas formas; tanto que los especialistas dificilmente los reconocían hasta ahora.


En cualquier caso, donde sea que esta inflamación se encuentre, significa un gran peligro para la salud y la vida del paciente. Lo peor es que, a pesar de nuestro conocimiento de su vida, su origen y desarrollo, no hemos podido establecer la cura contra este mal. Algunas veces estos parásitos mueren y son expulsados, posiblemente por anticuerpos producidos en el cuerpo humano. Desafortunadamente los casos en que estos parásitos mueren sin dañar son muy raros. Además, la quimioterapia no ha logrado producir ningún beneficio. El tratamiento usual es remover quirúrgicamente las partes del cuerpo afectadas por el absceso. Por todas estas razones debemos usar todos los medios posibles para luchar contra esta horrible enfermedad y salvar al hombre de sus peligros.


El Profesor Noeller, a través de la disección post mortem de cuerpos humanos en Alemania, encontró que la incidencia de la infección con la lombriz del perro es por lo menos del uno por ciento. En algunos lugares como Dalmacia, Islandia, el sudeste de Australia y Holanda, donde los perros son usados para tirar de trineos, el nivel de perros infectados de esta lombriz es el 12%. En Islandia el número de personas que sufren las inflamaciones causadas por esta lombriz ha llegado al 43%. Si añadimos a esto el sufrimiento humano, las pérdidas en carne de los animales infectados y el permanente peligro a la salud humana por la presencia de esta lombriz, no podemos ser muy tolerantes con este problema.


Tal vez la mejor forma de combatir este problema sea restringir la presencia de las lombrices a los perros y evitar que se transmitan o diseminen, ya que actualmente necesitamos tener algunos perros. No debemos dejar de tratar a los perros cuando sea necesario, eliminado las lombrices de sus amígdalas y, tal vez, repitiendo este proceso periódicamente en los perros pastores y los perros guardianes.


El hombre puede proteger su vida y salud manteniéndose a una distancia segura de los perros. No debemos abrazarlos, ni jugar con ellos ni dejarlos acercarse a los niños.
Los niños deben aprender que no deben jugar con perros ni acariciarlos. No se debe permitir que los perros estén lamiendo las manos de los niños o que se acerquen al lugar donde estos juegan. Desafortunadamente, se deja que los perros deambulen prácticamente donde sea, especialmente en los lugares donde juegan los niños y sus recipientes de alimento están esparcidos por toda la casa. Los perros deben tener sus propios recipientes para comer y no se les debe permitir lamer de los recipientes y los platos usados por los humanos. No se los debe dejar ingresar en verdulerías, restaurantes o mercados.
En general, se debe tener mucho cuidado de que no entren en contacto con ningún utensilio usado por el hombre para comer o beber."

Sabemos muy bien que el Profeta, que Allah le bendiga y le de paz, prohibió intimar con perros, que nos advirtió que no les permitamos lamer de nuestros recipientes y para que no los tengamos en nuestras casas sin necesidad. ¿Cómo es posible que las enseñanzas de un árabe analfabeto, Muhammad, coincidan con los últimos descubrimientos de las investigaciones cientificas? En verdad, no podemos más que repetir las palabras del Sagrado Corán:

"No habla por propio impulso. No es sino una revelación que se ha hecho" (53:3-4).

The Findings of Scientific Research Relative to Keeping Dogs
Here follows an excerpt from an article by the German scientist, Dr. Gerard Finstimer , (Translated from the German magazine Kosinos.) in which the author sheds light on the dangers to human health resulting from keeping dogs or coming in contact with them. He says: The increasing interest shown by many people in recent times in keeping dogs as pets has compelled us to draw public attention to the dangers which result from this, especially because pet dogs are hugged and kissed and permitted to lick the hands of the young and the old, and what is worse, to lick the plates and utensils which are used by human beings for eating and drinking.


Besides being unhygienic and uncouth, this practice is bad manners and abhorrent to good taste. However, we are not concerned with such matters. Leaving them to be addressed by teachers of etiquette and good taste. Rather this article is intended to present some scientific observations.


From the medical point of view, which is our main concern here, the hazards to human health and life from keeping and playing with dogs are not to be ignored. Many people have paid a high price for their ignorance, as the tapeworm carried by dogs is a cause of chronic disease, sometimes resulting in death.


This worm is found in man, in cattle, and in pigs, but it is found in fully-developed form only in dogs, wolves and rarely in cats. These worms differ from others in that they are minute and invisible, consequently, they were not discovered until very recently. He continues, Biologically the developmental process of this worm has some unique characteristics. In the lesions caused by them, one worm gives rise to many heads which spread and form other and varied kinds of lesions and abscesses. These heads develop into full-grown worms only in dogs' tonsils. In humans and in other animals they appear as lesions and abscesses completely different from the tapeworm itself In animals the size of an abscess may reach that of an apple, while the liver of the infected animal may grow from five to ten times its normal size. In human beings the size of the abscess may reach that of a clenched fist or even the head of an infant; it is filled with yellow fluid weighing from ten to twenty pounds. In the infected human it may cause diverse kinds of inflammations in the lungs, muscles, spleen, kidneys, and brain, and appears in such different forms that specialists, until very recently, had difficulty in recognizing it.


In any case, wherever this inflammation is found, it poses great danger to the health and life of the patient. What is worse is that, in spite of our knowledge of its life history, origin, and development, we have not been able to devise a cure for it, except that in some instances these parasites die out, possibly because of antibodies produced in the human body. Unfortunately, cases in which such parasites die without causing damage are rare indeed.


Moreover, chemotherapy has failed to produce any benefit, and the usual treatment is surgical removal of the abscessed parts of the body. For all these reasons we should use all possible resources to fight against this dreadful disease and save man from its dangers.


Professor Noeller, through post-mortem dissection of human bodies in Germany, found that the incidence of infection with dogs' worms is at least one percent. In some places such as Dalmatia, Iceland, southeastern Australia, andHolland, where dogs are used for pulling sleds, the incidence rate of tapeworm among dogs is 12 percent. In Iceland the number of people who suffer from the inflammation caused by this worm has reached the rate of 43 percent. If we add to this the human suffering, the loss of meat because of infection of cattle, and the permanent danger to human health because of the presence of tapeworms, we cannot be very complacent toward this problem.


Perhaps the best way to combat the problem is to limit the worms to dogs and not let them spread, since in actuality we need to keep some dogs. We should not neglect to treat dogs when necessary by getting rid of the tapeworms in their tonsils and perhaps repeating this process periodically on shepherd dogs and watchdogs.


Man can protect his life and health by keeping a safe distance from dogs. He should not hug them, play with them, or let them come close to children. Children should be taught not to play with dogs or to fondle them. Dogs should not be permitted to lick children's hands or come to places where they play. Unfortunately, dogs are allowed to roam about everywhere, especially in places where children play, and their bowls are scattered throughout the house. Dogs must have their own separate bowls, and they must not be allowed to lick bowls and plates used by humans. They should not be allowed inside grocery stores, restaurants, or marketplaces. In general, great care must be taken that they do not come in contact with anything which is used by people for eating and drinking.


We already know that the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam) forbade mixing with dogs, and that he warned against their licking plates and against keeping them without necessity. How is it possible that the teachings of an unlettered Prophet, should agree with the latest findings of scientific research? Truly, we cannot say anything except to repeat the words of the Qur'an: "Nor does he speak from (his own) desire. It is nothing other than a revelation sent down." (Qur'an 53:3-4)

Al-Bukhari and Muslim have recorded, on the authority of Abu Hurairah(radhiyallahu anhu), the Messenger(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) of Allah said, " If a dog drinks from one of your containers, wash it seven times." Ahmad and Muslim also have this addition, "Cleanse your containers if a dog licks it by washing it seven times, the first washing being with dirt(sand)."
